Depression During Pregnancy
Most people consider pregnancy to be one of the happiest times in a woman's life. While it certainly is true that pregnancy can be an exciting time, you would probably be surprised to find out exactly how often depression during pregnancy is a real issue. Let's take a little look at this problem since so many women have to deal it that during this time in their life. Although we may not be able to solve all the problems that are necessary, it may give you some insight that will help you through your difficulties.
As most of us are well aware, pregnancy is a time in which our hormones are in a state of flux. This can certainly cause a lot of moodiness on our part and it may also cause depression in many cases. The depression during pregnancy that women are going through, however, is often dismissed as being moodiness because of the hormonal changes that are going on in their body. This really is not very helpful because it doesn't allow the woman to get the care that they need, especially if they are dealing with a case of true depression.
You might be surprised to find out that there are some particular risk factors that may put you in a higher category as far as depression during pregnancy is concerned. For example, we may be going through problems with our relationships during this time and this can lead to additional stress and perhaps even depression. If we are having problems with our pregnancy or have had problems in a previous pregnancy, this can certainly add to our stress level as well and cause additional anxiety or perhaps depression. It may even be a matter of having a history of depression or perhaps a family history of the disorder. Regardless of the fact if you have experience depression previously or not, it can certainly show up during this time because of the additional stress on your body and the changes that are taking place within it.
The symptoms that you will experience with depression during pregnancy are very similar to the symptoms that are felt with any form of depression. The most important thing is that if you feel that you are dealing with this problem, speak your doctor about it. Don't allow people to tell you that you should simply brush it off or learn how to deal with it. Depression during pregnancy is a serious problem and should not be overlooked as being something that is trivial.
Unfortunately, you are somewhat limited as far as the treatments that you are going to get for depression during pregnancy. Many medications are simply off-limits because of the baby that is growing inside of you. You may need to seek some counseling in order to get through this rough time in your life until the baby is born. Although it is possible to be depressed after the baby is born as well, eventually, most women return to their normal state of mind soon after delivering the child.
